City council last night has agreed approved a city staff recommendation to keep the management of the downtown GFL Memorial Gardens in public hands rather then search for a private operator.
However, a number of councillors made it clear that they are not happy with the annual mounting losses which has averaged over 400-thousand dollars in recent years and last year topped over 730-thousand dollars.
Council wants to see those losses trimmed and if that doesn’t happen would be prepared to see the issue revisited.
A correction to a story we ran yesterday.
We had reported that until the end of June, the GFL Memorial Gardens had operated at a surplus of over 100-thousand dollars thanks to a deep playoff run by the Greyhounds.
It was stated at last night’s meeting that the venue was operating 100-thousand dollars better than projected but was still on track to operate at a loss of over half-a-million dollars.
