The Missanabie Cree First Nation and its 476 members have been successful in finally acquiring land for a new reserve.
The federal goverment in an Order in Council signed last month, have set aside over 38-hundred hectares of land in the Missanbie area north of Wawa and Chapleau including the mines and minerals for the use and benefit of the First Nation.
Chief Jason Gauthier called it an historical time for the Missanabie Cree First Nation saying they have been through 112 years of being denied a reserve.
Sault MP Terry Sheehan says this helps to correct mistakes from the past and provides them with their traditional territory…

The Missanabie Cree First Nation formally submitted a request for a reserve in ’93 but the issue dates back to the early 1900’s when they were incorrectly considered part of the Moose Cree First Nation under Treaty 9 with the federal and provincial governments.
The Ontario government eight years ago agreed that the lands should be transferred to the band.
