Now that he has got approval for a pilot project regarding overnight flashing traffic lights at three intersections, Ward 3 councillor Matthew Shoemaker plans on bringing forward a motion early in the new year regarding the better synchronization of traffic lights in the city to improve traffic flow.  It is something he brought up during the campaign prior to being elected to council and he says it is a combination of his own frustration and that of many drivers as you can drive the speed limit and be hit with repeated red lights…

He has brought up his concern on a preliminary basis with city staff…

In terms of the flashing light initiative, a city staff report had suggested that there would be an increase in accidents if you put in place flashing lights but Shoemaker points to the example of Sault, Michigan and data that was provided to him from the chief of police there…

The one-year pilot project approved by council at its last meeting will see flashing amber and red lights at the intersections of Wallace Terrace/Korah Road, Wellington/Lyons Avenue, and Lyons Avenue/ Patrick Street in the overnight hours.  Signage is up in those areas warning of the change and those intersections will switch to flashing lights on January 12th.
