Theatre Funding 3

Supplied by the Huron Superior Catholic District School Board…
Sault Ste. Marie:  The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is very appreciative of the federal government’s support of a special project at St. Mary’s College (SMC).

Sault Ste. Marie Member of Parliament (MP) Terry Sheehan announced today that the Theatre Project at St. Mary’s College will receive $100,000 as part of funding distributed in conjunction with the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure initiative.

The influx of funding is a complement to the thousands of dollars already raised for the project through the Board’s As One Campaign.

“The support of Sault Ste. Marie MP Terry Sheehan in obtaining this Canada 150 Community Infrastructure grant is greatly appreciated.  It is a tremendous boost to our campaign to make the auditorium at St. Mary’s College a vibrant part of the school and the greater community,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.
Funding for the out-fitting of the theatre has been underway since shortly after the provincial government approved funding for the new SMC.  Unfortunately, funding for the construction of the school didn’t include the out-fit of the theatre section.

“We appreciate this support for our theatre project.  Historically, SMC has had a strong presence in the community when it came to theatrical productions. This announcement will allow us to revive an integral component of student life,” said St. Mary’s College Principal, Cindy Sawyer.

Plans to install seating and other accoutrements to the theatre were approved recently by the Board of Trustees – pending sufficient money was raised to cover the costs.

The addition of the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure grant, will allow work phase one of the theatre to continue to move forward.  It is anticipated that the theatre will be available for student and community use later this spring.
