With the Flint water crisis continuing to unfold, PUC officials say there is no such concern for lead contamination in our water supply.  There are no lead water mains in Sault Ste Marie.   Homes dating back to the 1940s and beyond may still have lead pipes running from the mains to their homes – these are being changed out at the rate of a few kilometres a year inconjunction with Public Works projects.   In the meantime the water is rigorously tested twice a year – with a winter test currently underway.  The ongoing flushing program is designed to flush any sentiment out of the lines, out through opened hydrants.  Customers who live in older homes and have lead concerns can contact the PUC for free testing and if necessary filters will be provided.
