SSMPSIn the last several days the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has received reports of a phone scam where a male is indicating he is with a branch of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) or Revenue Canada.

The male caller has been asking personal information including full names, date of births, addresses, social insurance numbers as well as immigration status. Remember if you have submitted anything to these agencies they will have all of this information.

Some complainants were told that they owed back taxes and that payment was due immediately.  When the complaints questioned the back taxes they were threatened with arrest.

Fortunately none of the complaints provided the required information or sent funds.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind citizens to never provide personal information to any incoming call.  If the person on the phone line is aggressive, hang up and call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (formerly known as Phone Buster) at 1-888-495-8501.
