Sault Ste. Marie:  An era in Catholic education in Sault Ste. Marie will come to an end in June of 2017.

On June 30, 2017, John Stadnyk will retire after 40 years of service to Catholic education in Sault Ste. Marie.  For the past twelve years, Stadnyk has been the Director of Education for the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB).

Mr. Stadnyk, who served as a teacher, department head, vice-principal, principal, superintendent and director, announced his intentions to the HSCDSB Board of Trustees at their monthly meeting.

“I am truly grateful of the confidence the Board and its predecessor Board had in me, which provided all the opportunities throughout my career,” said Stadnyk.

Stadnyk began his teaching career in 1976 at the elementary level teaching at St. Paul, Sister Mary Clare, Holy Family, St. Stanislaus, and St. Hubert Catholic Schools. In 1980, he transferred to St. Mary’s College and taught there until becoming the school’s vice-principal in 1992.  After a brief stint as Vice-Principal and Principal of Mount St. Joseph College, Stadnyk returned to St. Mary’s College as its Principal in 1998.  In 2001, Stadnyk moved into the role of Superintendent of Education.  Four years later, on September 1, 2005, he was appointed Director of Education.

“I have been blessed to be part of Catholic education for my elementary and secondary schooling and my entire career.  My experiences and interactions with students, parents, fellow educators and administrators, trustees, support staff, clergy and the people who represented our numerous partners in education are something I will always cherish,” added Stadnyk.
“It’s with bittersweet emotion that I accept Jack’s retirement announcement. We are sad to see him go, but also very happy to see him wrap up his career on his terms. Jack is an honourable and caring individual, whom we were blessed to have as a member and leader of our Board. He’s done a tremendous job as Director of Education, and after exemplary service to Catholic education over four decades, he deserves a long, relaxing and fulfilling retirement that is filled with great joy and laughter,” said HSCDSB Chairperson, Leslie Cassidy-Amadio.
“On a personal note, it has been a privilege and honour, as a Trustee, to get to know Jack better, and I am proud to call him my friend,” added Cassidy-Amadio.

The Board will now begin the process to recruit and select a new Director of Education.  The Board of Trustees will embark on a consultation within the Board community and with Catholic partners, both electronically and in focus groups.  Information from the consultations will provide Trustees with information that will be the basis of the posting for the Director’s position.

The Board will contract with a consultant to assist in the recruitment and selection process.
