T-Birds Raking

Supplied by the Sault Thunderbirds…
On Saturday, November 12th, 2016 the Soo Thunderbirds hockey team replaced their hockey sticks with rakes for the day as they volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Rake-A-Thon.
The team, as well as their coaches Jordan Smith and Ryan Maunu, attended 8 households throughout the city and raked and bagged leaves as part of Big Brothers Big Sisters ongoing fundraiser, the Rake-A-Thon. The “T-Birds”, who are currently the top team in the NOJHL’s West Division, worked extremely hard, filling over 180 bags with leaves in less than 6 hours. By participating in the Rake-a-Thon, the players had the opportunity to give back to the community they represent while supporting the fund raising efforts of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The Rake-A-Thon fund raising initiative was planned by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie, whereby staff and volunteers raked lawns throughout the city for a mere $3.00 bag. The original event took place on October 30th, 2016 and was so successful, the agency ended up with a wait list. Thanks to the Thunderbirds, many homes in need were crossed off that list.
The donation of biodegradable leaf bags from Lowe’s, Lyons Timber Mart, RONA, Soo Mill, Home Hardware and TSC allows for 100% of the proceeds raised to remain local and benefit participants of the diverse programs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie offers our youth.
As a not for profit organization serving youth in our community Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste.
