Team Smith, curling out of the Community First Curling Centre, captured first place this past weekend at the Under 18 (U18) Orion Junior Women’s Slam in Cambridge Ontario.  Team Smith includes Jamie Smith (Skip),  Breanna  Hamilton (Vice), Kendra Carriere (Second) and Erin McLean (Lead).  Sixteen U18 girl’s teams from across Ontario and the US competed in the Orion Junior Slam which is part of the Junior Curling Slam series.

Finishing round robin play with a 3-1 record, Team Smith advanced to the quarter finals Sunday against Team Rodgers.  Rodgers, a US developmental U18 team out of Boston Massachusetts, led 6-4 but gave up 3 points in the 8th end on a burned rock and lost to Team Smith by a score of 7-6.  Semi-final play saw Team Smith take a 5-2 lead against Team Clendenan after 6 ends.  Team Clendenan, last year’s  U18 Ontario Provincial runner-ups, battled back to tie 5-5 forcing an extra end.  Team Smith took two to win by a final score of 7-5.

The Championship finals saw back and forth action against Team Bartlett out of the Seaforth Curling Club.  A steal of two in the 5th  gave Team Smith the lead. They went on to win the Championship by a final score of 5-4.

Team Croisier out of the Idylwylde Curling Club in Sudbury captured the consolation final.

Team Smith sees play next weekend Nov 11-13 at the U18 Pegasus Slam in Kingston Ontario hosted by the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club.

Team Smith has qualified for the U18 Players Championship  Invitational scheduled for  April 2017 with a runner-up placing in the finals at the U18 Phoenix slam in Kitchener this past September.
