Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario – During a recent strategy session held on October 22nd 2016, the Board of Directors and Management Staff of the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation (SSMADC) carried out a strategic planning exercise covering areas of operating/capital expenditures, investment and business development opportunities within the next five years, and the creation of a new mission and vision statement for the SSMADC. The board was joined by John Febbraro of the SSMEDC and assisted by Jody Rebek DiCerbo, VIVE (Management Consulting and Events).

The strategy session took an opportunity to focus on some of the successes achieved since the last strategy session held in December 2015.  These successes included the achievement of record passenger levels with the latest 12 month period through the end of September 2016 totaling 208,620; an increase of 5.3% from previous year.  Other successes in the past year included the attraction of a new restaurant operator, Santini’s On the Fly, which provides daily service including alcohol sales.  The Corporation was also successful in securing NOHFC and City of Sault Ste. Marie EDF funding for an expansion of JD Aero that is nearing completion at a cost of seven million dollars, which will see a new aviation fuel supplier as well as an increase in the JD Aero workforce to 140 employees.  Funds were also attained from ACAP (Airports Capital Assistance Plan) for a half million dollar essential airside power upgrades.

This past year has scene further capital investments into the safety and security and general upgrades of the airport of over $1.5 million.  This brings the SSMADC investment into capital upgrades at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport since taking ownership on March 28, 1998 to a total of over $38,500,000.

The retreat provided an opportunity for the board to review these accomplishments and explore ways to further enhance the airport’s ability in meeting its challenges.
