SaultMIThe Sault, Michigan City Commission accepted a request to establish a Marine Service District at their meeting this week.  Monday’s decision to approve was actually the first step in the development of such a district in the city, not necessairily for a specific subject property. Commissioners moved one step closer after some discussion about MCM Marine, who requested an extension from an earlier date to move forward with the proposed ordinance.  The issue centered around language in the ordinance — which appears to have been resolved.  Prior to the decision, there was some discussion about MCM Marine, who had been the subject of having property that was unslightly to neighbouring residents.  The Marine Service District will allow accomodate uses that depend upon direct access to the St. Marys River to serve recreational or commercial waterway users. Those uses range from marine re-supply services and water-based tour facilities to marine fuel sales and public and private campgrounds, among others.  The district would also allow for watercraft storage, dismantling for salvage, spares or recycling of watercraft and dredging — subject to certain conditions.  A decision is expected sometime next month to formally establish the Marine Service District.
