On the heels of Michigan voters giving approval for legalizing recreational marijuana, the Sault City Commission has said no to potential marijuana retailers within the border city.
The Sault Evening News reports that the Commission voted 6-1 in favour of prohibiting any marijuana retail establishment.
Abby Baker was the lone commissioner on Monday night to vote against the prohibition.
The Commission was advised by its legal staff that it could always reverse the decision later as the State of Michigan will be taking a full year to develop regulations.
The new city council in the Ontario Sault will soon be facing the same decision.
The province’s deadline for municipalities to opt-out of the private retail model for cannabis stores is January 22nd.
A staff report for the new council will be brought forward for consideration at a meeting on January 14th.
