SaultMISault, Michigan City Commissioners will decide on a Michigan Coastal Zone Management Grant at their meeting on Tuesday night.  The 30 thousand dollars would go towards a Waterfront Redevelopment Study.  The study would involve Alford Park, Carbide Dock and Harvey Marina.  The idea is to eventually develop a plan for preserving public access to those affected properties while optimizing economic opportunities.  The Commission is being asked to approve a grant agreement with the Michigan Department of Environment Quality with a 30 thousand dollar local match to come out of the 2015-16 Fiscal Year Budget.

The City Commission will also discuss approval of a letter of intent to purchase between the city of Sault, Michigan and Soo Brewing Company.  The issue culminates more than two years of proposals and reviews regarding interest in a redevelopment of the property housing the city’s former water pumping station at Sherman Park.  The latest interest outside of Soo Brewing occured in mid-March of this year, but that applicant later withdrew their interest.  Commissioners will be asked to approve the letter of intent.  This would give Soo Brewing until January 1st, 2017 to review the condition of the property and perform any due diligence to make that property suitable for its future use.

A request for funding for the Refrigeration Plant at the Pullar Community Building will be considered at Tuesday’s meeting.  Money in the amount of 50 thousand dollars would go towards repairs to two compressors.  The actual repair cost is anywhere from 20 thousand to about 60 thousand dollars.  The money would come mostly from contingency with the remainder from the General Fund balance.  The repairs needed include those to stop an ammonia leak for one compressor and wear prevention on the other compressor caused by severe heat traced back to a cold water circulating pump failure and repair from last winter.
