Poverty is very real in our community; families and individuals are making impossible choices like whether to put food on the table or pay the rent. Poverty touches every aspect of a person’s life, making it difficult to get ahead and realize a future full of possibilities. With the holidays quickly approaching, we often forget about those in need. Locally, 1 in 5 people struggle with poverty.

United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District is addressing the root causes of poverty, working with multiple community partners on strategies that reduce the impact of low-income on the health and well-being of people in our community. United Way is focussing on three priority community issues and their respective outcomes; Essential Services, Workforce Entry, and Food Security.

United Way has teamed up with Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott and Quality Inn & Suites Bay Front for “5 Days of Giving”. From December 12th until December 16th, these hotels will be donating a portion off of each room that is occupied.

“Choosing to support United Way was simple, knowing all funds raised will make an impact while staying local was important to us.”, said Sunny Naqvi, General Manager of Quality Inn & Suites Bay Front.

“We support causes that make a difference in our community, and United Way is making a difference.” said Dave Cartmill, General Manager of Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott.

“It is wonderful to see hotels supporting causes such as ours,” Patrick McGuire, 2019 Campaign Chair, said, “The support that we see from the community is strong and growing.”

Brochures and donation jars will be available at both hotel locations for anyone who would like to donate. For more information on this event, please visit the United Way’s website at www.uwssmalgoma.ca.
