City council has given its approval to enter into a memorandum of understanding with a local group of 4 indigenous organizations which will allow for a major development to move forward for the City’s Gateway Site on the waterfront.
The first phase of the proposed development is estimated at 40-million dollars and would include 120 residential units of mixed housing in which a portion would be geared to income rental and affordable housing——the exact percentage of such is still to be determined.
To that end, the Bawating Urban Indigenous Committee will be holding community consultations over the fall and winter to determine wants and needs to assist with the development.
The project is described as inclusive and the units would be made available to the whole community.
The development also features commercial components and green space.
The next step is for the City and development consortium is to negotiate the final details for the transfer of the land which would include the value of the land and the environmental condition of the property and the costs to clean it up.
