Mayor Christian Provenzano at the request of Algoma Steel, travelled last week to Ottawa with the local steelmaker’s CEO Kalyan Ghosh and other company staff to do some lobbying over the US imposed steel tariffs.
Provenzano told council members at Monday night’s meeting that he met with members of the Prime Minister’s Office, staff with the Minister of Finance and with the International Trade Minister.
Mayor Provenzano says the federal government is actively trying to find a resolution to the issue and he was in agreement with councillor Matthew Shoemaker in the view that our federal government should not ratify the new NAFTA agreement unless the US imposed tariffs on Canadian steel are lifted.
