A concept demonstration was carried out at the Sault College Robotics Lab recently for Soo Mill testing a robotic lumber sorting and placing application.
The overall goal of the project was to develop and test a robotic lumber sorting and placing application which would simulate how the automated process would integrate with and function within Soo Mill’s existing truss plant on Sackville Road.
College Manager of Applied Research John Coccimiglio describes the next steps ahead for Soo Mill following the demonstration in the Robotics Lab…

So far, the Robotics program has carried out similar research projects with three other businesses and Coccimiglio says the interest is there…

Various government partners provide funding to offset the cost of the research and if it is a first project for a company there is no charge to the company.
The lab itself was developed in partnership with Tenaris with funding support from various government partners at both senior levels.
This is the second year for the program which lasts two semesters and currently has 10-students.
