Sault Ste. Marie will be hosting the Special Olympics Ontario 2019 Provincial Winter Games from January 31st- February 3rd 2019. The games will be bringing approximately 500 athletes and coaches, along with their friends, families, and supporters to our city. To make this huge event successful, we will need approximately 400 volunteers to assist our staff.

The basic volunteer responsibilities and roles include:

o Assisting in setup of equipment for events and ceremonies
o Distribution of medals and presentation pillows to sport venues
o Monitoring medal counts
o Marshaling of athletes
o Assisting with duties throughout the event for food services (buffet dinner, breakfast, lunch, and )
o Registration and providing information to family and spectators at the venues
o Accreditation assistance at each hotel
o Assisting in all sport competitions

Every volunteer is highly encouraged to attend opening ceremonies at GFL Memorial Gardens on the 31st of January 2019 at 7:30PM. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and an appreciation luncheon at the Legion Hall on Sunday February 3rd, 2019.

Volunteer minimum requirements:

o Minimum age of 16 to volunteer
o Children aged 10-15 may volunteer with a parent or guardian
o Must commit at least 4 hours
o Must complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) which is provided free of charge to all residents of Sault Ste. Marie volunteering for games
o Must complete an online orientation
o Must attend one in-person volunteer orientation session in January

o GFL Memorial Gardens (Opening & Closing Ceremonies)
o Searchmont Resort (Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Snowshoeing)
o John Rhodes Community Centre Arena (Speed Skating, Figure Skating)
o Community First Curling Centre (Curling)
