(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – June 8, 2018): It’s a momentous day for the Algoma Thunderbirds varsity athletics program. Today, soon-to-be graduate Reng Gum signed a one year contract to play professional basketball in Portugal with the Associacao Amigos D’Angrabasket in the Português ProLiga League.

“We are very excited for Reng to continue his playing career and we believe he can play a large role in his first season as a professional in Portugal,” said men’s basketball Head Coach Thomas Cory. “Reng is a great teammate and is willing to do whatever is asked of him and will continue to represent Algoma University with his great character and hard work.”

Originally from the Sudan, Gum came to Algoma University from Surrey, British Columbia. For three seasons (2015-2018), Gum provided a strong presence in the interior for the Algoma Thunderbirds men’s basketball team, helping make the squad competitive in the OUA.

“We are thrilled to sign Reng. We believe in his work ethic and his potential to accomplish great things with Angrabasket,” said Associacao Amigos D’Angrabasket’s Head Coach Nuno Rodrigues.

Gum, a 6’7″ power forward, served as team captain for two seasons with the Thunderbirds, and was Defensive Player of the Year twice during his career. Gum was the second ranked shotblocker and sixth ranked rebounder in the OUA this past season.

While in B.C., Gum played high school basketball at Guildford Park Secondary School. Following his high school career, he attended Douglas College.

Gum will graduate tomorrow from Algoma U with an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a specialization in Accounting.

“I am excited to be playing for Angra basketball and for Coach Nuno,” said Gum. “I can’t wait to get started in September and have been preparing for the start of the season back home in Vancouver.”

Gum is the first player in the history of the Algoma Thunderbirds to continue their basketball career at the professional level.
