(SAULT STE MARIE, ON) – Staff Sergeant Mike Maville, Detachment Commander of the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), would like to remind members of the public that snowmobile safety is an important component of the OPP’s Provincial Traffic Safety Program. So far this year 27 snowmobiler deaths (a near 15 year high) have been reported.

Snowmobiling is a popular winter activity in Ontario. Just remember that there are risks to consider every time you head out.

  • Prepare yourself prior to your ride; create a kit of personal items such as water, high energy food, a cell phone, medication or anything you deem important.

  • Prepare a safety kit; it may include waterproof matches, GPS, flares, shovel, candle, ice picks.

  • Provide a family member/friend with the details of your route, departure and return times.

  • The OPP collaborates with the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) on providing safe, enjoyable snowmobiling on OFSC prescribed trails.

  • The OPP encourages snowmobilers to adhere to OFSC trails, as these remain the safest areas to ride on.

  • Travelling on unsafe ice, speeding, driving too fast for the conditions and alcohol consumption continue to be leading causes in OPP-investigated snowmobile fatalities.

Ride safe so you can ride again!
