Sault Ste. Marie, MI — At their meeting on January 15, 2018, the City of Sault Ste. Marie City Commission voted unanimously to lift the snowmobile restriction on Portage Avenue from Gov. Osborn Blvd to the Sugar Island Ferry Dock.
The action taken by the City Commission modified a resolution originally adopted in 2010 that allows snowmobiles on all City right-of-ways in accordance with the regulations outline in Chapter 24, Article VI of the City of Sault Ste. Marie Code with the exception of certain streets. The exceptions where snowmobiles are not allowed are the following:
o Highway I-75 from 3 Mile Road to the International Bridge
o M-129 from 3 Mile Road to the I-75 Business Spur
o I-75 Business Spur beginning at 3 Mile Rd & Extending North to Portage Ave
o Easterday Avenue Hill from Davitt Street to Pine Street
o Peck Street from Ashmun Street to Gov. Osborn Blvd.
o Gov. Osborn Blvd. from Peck Street to Spruce Street
o Spruce Street from Court Street west to Pine Street
o Nolte from Memorial Drive to Pine Street
o Memorial Drive between Nolte and Peck Street
o Marquette Avenue from the I-75 Business Spur to Shunk Road
Snowmobilers are reminded that operation of snowmobiles on the streets or right-of-ways shall be on far right hand side of the plowed road way or on designated groomed trails. Snowmobilers are also reminded that snowmobiles must come to a complete stop at each and every intersection even if the intersection is not posted for a required stop, and that hand motions must be used for turns and stops.
