The costs of cleaning up the mould from the McMeeken Arena is expected to come in at around 72-thousand dollars and council will be asked at tonight’s meeting to approve making use of funds from a reserve to help cover the cost.
A report to council explains that the funds can’t be covered by the McMeeken’s operational budget.
Exceptionally warm weather in the late summer and early fall contributed to a significant amount of mould being formed in a short time in the dressing room areas.
The remediation efforts included the cleaning of mould off the walls, removing the sport flooring and the replacing of millwork where required.
Air duct cleaning and the replacement of contaminated light fixtures was also necessary.
A mould remediation specialist along with an engineering firm was brought in for the remediation work.
The McMeeken is scheduled to open today.
