news-Sault Region Conservation Authroity Statement from the Sault Region Conservation Authority…
Issued September 7, 2016 @ 9:30 am
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to issue a statement to
residents in regard to current watershed conditions.
Another weather system is forecast to move through the Sault Ste. Marie and Prince
Township area today and tonight. The storm system is predicted to bring further rainfall
with imbedded thunderstorms. The general precipitation amounts expected in Sault Ste.
Marie and area in the next 24 hours are 20-30 mm. There is the potential of localized
thunderstorm activity this afternoon.
The precipitation anticipated overnight and into Thursday morning is predicted as
steady rain with little convective activity.
Yesterday’s storms caused an increase in water levels and a corresponding increase in
flows. As of this morning, the water levels are slowly receding. With the arrival of the
forecasted precipitation, runoff in to local streams and rivers will result in a further
increase in water levels and flows. The localized thunderstorms expected may have the
capacity to overwhelm areas of poor drainage and cause localized flooding.
The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region
Conservation Authority are flowing well. The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation
Authority will be closely monitoring stream flows across the watershed.
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to extend a warning to
residents and visitors to use extreme caution when close to rivers, creeks and channels.
Potential increases in water levels and flows can be especially dangerous and stream
banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from fast flowing rivers and
streams.
This watershed conditions statement is valid until Thursday September 8, 2016 at 4:30
pm.
