(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Wednesday, June 15, 2016 – Today, Member of Parliament, Terry Sheehan, announced $25,000 in funding for Garden River First Nation’s Ojibway Park seniors project.

“Our government is dedicated to ensuring that Canadian seniors, including Indigenous seniors, can get involved in community activities that meet their needs and interests, tap their collective resources and experiences, and promote their participation. I’m happy to be part of a government that supports seniors in Sault Ste. Marie,” stated Sheehan.

Today’s funding for Garden River First Nation comes as part of the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) which provided funding for close to 1,850 community-based projects in 2015-2016.

“Ojibway Park “Home of Laughing Waters” has become a project driven endeavor and the need for an integrated approach that focuses on social interaction which will require our community citizens to use the Park as a catalyst for taking action to advance the goals and aspirations of the First Nation community.

The New Horizons for Seniors program will allow Garden River First Nation to call on its Elders and Knowledge Holders to share the rich history, traditions and stories of a cultural landmark within the community,” said Chief of Garden River First Nation, Paul Syrette.

“The investments our government is making are not only about creating good jobs and growing the economy – they’re also about building stronger communities. Partnerships like this one with Garden River First Nation are vital to deliver change and improve the lives of seniors in our riding,” concluded Sheehan.
