In 2006, the City of Toronto was given the authority to ban union and corporate donations and is currently the only municipality able to do so.     During public consultations held last year, the provincial government says most submissions supported giving municipalities the option of using ranked ballots in future elections.  Ranked ballots would allow voters to rank candidates in order of preference and the option would begin in time for the next election in 2018.
