CitySSM  After more than 40-years in providing daycare services, city council has decided to close its three municipal operated centres.  Council voted of 9 to 4 in support of the resolution that calls for the transition to be completed by December 31st 2017.  The transition period will allow for the city’s Community Services Department and the District Social Services Administration Board the time needed to find alternative child care providers and those existing users of the municipal service will be given priority status for those new spaces.  The decision to close the child care centres will impact 30 staff members. The decision also means the 855-thousand dollars the City is provided by the District Social Services Administration Board for day care services will be reallocated to other not for profit providers. Many of the councillors that voted for the motion did so partly on the basis that an additional 20 day care spots would be created in the community above the 100 the city is allocated for.  The city has operated the three centres at a loss of around 450-thousand dollars.
