Congress of Aboriginal Peoples National Chief Dwight Dorey was in the Sault yesterday as part of a national grassroots  engagement tour to hear the concerns of indigenous people living off-reserve and in urban areas.  Chief Dorey says the consultation sessions are also a chance for the organization to talk about its work in gaining standing with the senior levels of government.  A long-time court battle that is now before the Supreme Court may finally clarify which level of government is responsible for those living off-reserve and he says a decision may come sometime this summer or fall…

Homelessness, health care and employment challenges are common themes raised at the consultation hearings and another big issue raised is discrimination…

Chief Dorey says findings from the consultations will be presented at the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples’ annual general meeting in the fall.
