CitySSMCouncil will revisit the issue of a report from the Chief Administrative Officer on Monday night.  Action is expected regarding the report that would include information related to the Fire/Emergency Medical Services Realignment — a motion that was announced at City Council two weeks ago.   Highlights of the report would include a 90-day update on how the realignment is proceeding, along with an explanation, outline and update on Fire/EMS ongoing risk assessment.  The report is in response to a suggestion that the Ontario Fire Marshal can be retained to do a comprehensive risk assessment in Sault Ste. Marie at the request of City Council.

A report from the City’s Community Services Department is also included in Monday’s Council agenda.  The report highlights two options on how the city can recognize Sault native and NHL star Ron Francis:  renaming a section of Bruce Street to Ron Francis Way or renaming a Corporate Suite at the Essar Centre in his honour.  It also includes details on any cost impacts for both options.  The cost for renaming the section of Bruce Street between Queen and Bay streets to Ron Francis Way would cost between 12 and 15 thousand dollars.  This is due to replacement of banners and constructing an outdoor commemorative area.  The report suggests the cost to name a corporate suite in the NHL star’s honour runs between 5 and 10 thousand dollars, to allow for suitable naming identification on the exterior fo the suite and a plaque inside the suite.  An appendix highlights other suggestions from the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.  Those ideas ranged from turning Bellevue Park into a ‘Park of Champions’, including a statue of Francis to naming seat sections at the Essar Centre in recognition of Francis and other individuals.  Another idea highlighted in the report appendix is naming a scholarship in his honour in an amount of 1 thousand dollars that may be split between Sault College and Algoma University.  Funding for any of those options would have to be referred to the 2016 City Budget.   A recommendation has been made to council that it receive this report and provide direction on any next steps.
