In the fall of 2013, the Algoma District Cancer Program (ADCP) championed a pilot Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) which proved to be a resounding success. Since then, the Council has provided invaluable feedback and input for the purpose of enhancing the overall patient experience. The ADCP PFAC is now recruiting new patient/family advisors to meet the ever growing need for patient and family member consultation and engagement.

The role of the ADCP-PFAC is to contribute to the cancer program’s ability to achieve the highest quality patient outcomes by listening to the voice of the patient, addressing the patient experience and implementing positive changes and process improvements. By working together, better health care outcomes, wiser allocations of resources and greater patient satisfaction will be achieved. At the heart is the belief that health care staff and the patient are working as partners in care.

“We recognize that patients are the experts when it comes to addressing their health care needs,” says Andrea Moraca, Director of Clinical Programs and ADCP-PFAC Co-Chair. “SAH is committed to a patient-centred approach to health care delivery, and who better than the patient and their loved ones to help shape our decisions and processes?”

SAH is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on the ADCP PFAC. Candidates should have had recent interaction with the oncology program (ideally within the past two years) as either an inpatient, outpatient or as a family member or loved one of a patient. We are looking for people who are willing to be open, honest and committed to providing meaningful and thoughtful input to improving the patient experience at SAH.
