A  Blind River area woman has been fined $2,500 for unlawfully shooting two moose on a roadway.

Stacey Armstrong, a resident of Mississauga First Nation, pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm on a roadway. In addition to the fine, the moose were forfeited to the Crown and have been donated to charity.

Court heard that on October 12, 2014, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers were conducting a routine patrol on Highway 129 when they inspected a pickup truck carrying a cow and a calf moose. The officers later discovered the kill site in Leluk Township, north of Hinkler Road and determined that both moose were shot on the travelled portion of a well-used forest access road using a high-powered rifle. Further investigation involving the ministry’s canine unit and forensic evidence linked the kill site to the moose and Armstrong.

Justice of the Peace Philip Stanghetta heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sault Ste. Marie, on December 15, 2015.
