APHLabratory testing has confirmed the first case of influenza A in Algoma District. Environmental Health Manager Jon Bouma of Algoma Public Health says influenza can be a serious disease especially in those with other health concerns. Illness due to influenza usually lasts two to 7 days, sometimes longer in the elderly and people with chronic diseases. And some people can become very ill, possibly developing complications and requiring hospitalization.

In addition to flu immunization, there are other precautions you can take to help prevent getting the flu and spreading it to others:

o Wash your hands thoroughly and often may reduce your chances of getting sick.
o Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough.
o If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve – not into your hands.
o Avoid sharing food, eating utensils, towels or handkerchiefs.
o Keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (gel or wipes) handy at work, home, and in the car.

It’s not too late to get your flu shot. To book an appointment, please call 705-541-2332 or 1-800-469-2449. More information on influenza can be found on www.algomapublichealth.com.
