cityofssm  Senior management staff with the City is recommending that the municipality transition out of providing daycare. In a separate report in council’s agenda for Monday’s meeting a daycare review committee involving stakeholders wasn’t able to come up with a recommendation but did offer five options that outlined impacts.  The City has been considering transferring the 100-municipal daycare spaces that are operated at three centres to other licenced daycare providers due to a reduction in funding from the Ministry of Education.  If council accepts the staff recommendation, the transition would commence in January and have an intended end date of December 31st 2016.  Closing all municipal daycare centres would save the City approximately 340-thousand dollars annually in operational requirements.  The elimination of positions would result in severance packages totalling approximately 480-thousand dollars.
