ADSB_CLCC_Green_2_1600The latest ‘Students As Researchers’ conference at Stokely Creek Lodge was highlighted at Tuesday’s public school board meeting.  This is the second year the Algoma District School Board has participated in the provincial initiative — aimed at giving students the chance to think for themselves and introduce them to the collaborative inquiry research method.  The event attracted students from across the district.  The group worked to answer questions related to the theme of what their ideas are for living, learning and working in today’s schools.  After finalizing their questions, participants determine how to proceed with those questions, going on to conduct surveys or focus groups resulting in measurable research.  Six student teams attended the latest conference earlier this month.  Two student teams from the public board went on to present their research at Queen’s Park last year.

Another highlight of Tuesday’s public school board meeting was a pow wow that happened at White Pines earlier this month.  The student-led event attracted 200 students from the intermediate and secondary School.  The purpose of the pow wow is to have students come together and for all students to participate and to learn about types of pow wow dancing and the overall pow wow experience.  A canned food collection was also set up that day, with proceeds going to Pauline’s Place and St. Vincent Place.  A sacred fire also burned outside for the day while the pow wow took place inside the school gymnasium.
