ElectionAmong the other highlights from Wednesday’s Coalition For Algoma Passenger Trains meeting at City Hall was commentary from two Sault Ste. Marie riding candidates.  Liberal Terry Sheehan and New Democrat Skip Morrison spoke up when asked about the issue of a transportation strategy.  Morrison told the standing room only crowd that the NDP has a ‘definite’ commitment’ in the solving ACR Passenger rail service issue.  He blamed the lack of leadership from Ottawa for the ‘mess’ the service is in right now, adding that CAPT had shown more leadership in 40 minutes last night than Ottawa has over the last several months on the issue.  Morrison’s answer also included recalling memories of films of family visiting a lodge by rail and that most of the rail users likely had similar stories to share. He added that Carol Hughes has spoken about the issue in the House Of Commons more than two dozen times — even northern New Democrat Charlie Angus has made the ACR service an issue.  Sheehan responded by mentioning his awareness of the issue more than a year ago as Acting Mayor.  Sheehan told those in attendance at City Hall that a decision to take away the 2.2 million subsidy from the ACR Passenger rail service ‘made no sense’.  He suggested that the funding was taken away to balance the books while saying that there is a need to sustain and expand rail across Canada. He also credited the crowd in attendance for reinstating the rail service and to keep ‘plugging away’.
