SSMPSAs the summer months approach the first long weekend is finally here.  Unfortunately many tragedies take place on a long weekend; some of which could be avoided with careful planning.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists and residents of several steps they can take to reduce being a victim.

If you are going away or headed out to camp make sure you have someone checking your home.  Leave lights on timers and make sure someone is picking up your mail or newspapers.  Inform your trusted neighbors that you will be away and ask them to keep an eye on your residence.  If you notice someone suspicious around your neighborhood, don’t hesitate to contact City Police.

While travelling this weekend, make sure you obey the speed limit and ensure all persons in the vehicle are wearing their seat belts.  Don’t drink and drive.  Don’t text and drive.  Keep your eyes on the road.  Make sure your brake lights and signal lights are all working.

If you stop at shopping malls, don’t leave valuables visible in your vehicle.  Make sure you lock your vehicle.  Don’t leave your purse unattended.

It has been a cool spring and the water has not warmed up in area lakes and rivers.  Don’t drink while on the waterways.  Also ensure everyone in the boat is wearing a life jacket.

Have a safe long weekend!
