SaultMIThe proposed Fiscal Year 2015-16 Budget is scheduled to be introduced at Monday’s City Commission meeting.  It’s the next step in passing the budget, which could happen as early as the May 18th Commission meeting.  The scheduling of public hearings for that budget is also expected to take place this evening. Commissioners met last week to decide on a number of ‘Hit and Wish List’ items, including approving an appropriation of 110 thousand dollars for city’s Economic Development Corporation and several budget corrections, amounting to reduced spending within the General Fund of about 53 thousand dollars.  The budget, which is estimated to have an ending fund balance of 49 million dollars at the end of June 2016.

One of the topics of discussion at Monday’s City Commission meeting is the findings from an evaluation of city manager Oliver Turner.  The review was agreed to at a Commission meeting last month — the work was done by a committee that included two City Commissioners and the mayor.  One of the results highlighted was a score of 48 hundred and six out of 5 thousand for Turner.  Recommendations made resulting from the review include setting goals and objectives for Turner’s second year of employment with the city and a one year extension of Turner’s contract to June 2020.

City Commission will be asked to approve a proposal on Monday related to the third phase of the Combined Sewer Overflow project.  Tester Construction Inspection Services of Sault, Michigan would begin compaction and bituminous testing related to the associated construction this Thursday, if approved.  Tester has performed similar services during the project’s first two phases and the Library Drive and Hursley Street projects.  The work would be done at a cost of about 120 thousand dollars, with that money coming out of the project’s budget.
