Supplied by the Huron Superior Catholic District School Board… Sault Ste. Marie:  Staff of the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) have stepped up during the As ONE fundraising campaign 50-Day Challenge.

Kathleen Proulx, Principal at St. Basil’s Catholic School in White River, donated $10,000 through the purchase of two room sponsorships, one in memory of her husband who passed away a couple of years ago.

“I wanted to give something back to a system and Board that has given me the opportunity to teach and be a leader.   I admire the Board because it always goes above and beyond to provide all possible support to all students,” said Proulx.

Also sponsoring rooms in the new St. Mary’s College is the family of HSCDSB Superintendent of Education John Bruno.  He, along with his wife Cecilia and their daughter Ida Andrea pledged $5,000 toward the Dance Studio/Viewing Gallery.  The room is located off the main gymnasium and will allow for seating to be set up for major sporting events.

“Our family attended St. Mary’s College, Mount St. Joseph College and St. Basil Secondary.  Each provided us a strong base from which to build our lives.  We support Catholic education and all it provides.  We also strive to live our lives by following the SMC motto ‘Teach Me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge’,” said John Bruno.

Another Bruno family has also made a generous donation.  Tony Bruno, Supervisor of Caretakers, his wife Marie and daughter Melinda are sponsors of one of the two Gallery areas available for $2,500.

“Each of us represents a graduate from each of the Catholic high schools, Mount St. Joseph College, St. Basil Secondary, and St. Mary’s College, and we are proud of it.  We are pleased that Catholic education will continue to flourish for generations to come, and guide our young students with a focus on faith development rooted in Jesus Christ,” said Maria Bruno.

Sponsoring the Weight Room in the Physical Education area of the new SMC are Christopher and Darrell Czop, who work for the Board, and their brother Danny, another SMC alumni.  The contribution of $2,500 will certainly be welcomed by students wanting to live a healthy lifestyle and student-athletes wanting to remain in top physical condition.

“As proud graduates of St. Mary’s College, the Czop brothers wanted to give back to a school and school board that has provided us with so many opportunities and has instilled the Catholic values we continue to carry with us today.  Being a healthy well-rounded individual is something that has been instilled in our belief system.  This was one of the many reasons we decided to make our donation for the naming rights of the Weight Room in the new SMC.  We encourage all alumni to consider making a donation to the As ONE Campaign,” said Darrell.

Employees who have donated $1,000 toward sponsoring a theatre or bleacher seat include Joe and Christine Chilelli, Jim Fitzpatrick, Mary Pedatella, Chris Spina, Rose Burton Spohn and Ron and Rosanne Zagordo.  The local chapter of Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario also sponsored a theatre seat.

The As ONE Fundraising Committee is very grateful for the generosity shown by these employees and other employees who have given during the 50-Day Challenge.  Every dollar counts in creating state-of-the-art facilities for SMC students to participate in the arts and athletics.
